The Brownie Camera.
'He was the greatest camera designer that ever lived. Practically all camera designs are made after his designs to day, throughout the world.'
The first Brownie camera was made of Jute board and wood, with a simple lens and a rotary shutter for the time and exposures; It was marked like a Kodak camera with a 'V' line on top of it.The Brownie Camera was sold for just 5 shilling in England and 1 dollar in America.
Frank Brownell created the Brownie Camera after being in camera productions since the early 1880s, one of his early productions when working for 'Eastman's cameras' was the folding plate camera of sound design and construction. In 1899, the folding plate camera had updated to two more model cameras in 1899.
Although this was going on 'Brownie Camera' had come on a great deal and everyone was mad about them, although the camera had a push on lid which wasn't very secure for the camera. The camera within a year had sold about 100,000 and almost half of them were sold in England. It was always advertised in the popular press and children's magazines, which attracted a lot of attention, In June 1900 it had a full page dedicated to the advertising of the camera. Competitions attracted as many as 10,000 entries.
The Brownie Camera took 6 images at 2 1/4 inches square on a cartridge roll of film. In 1901 the new Brownie Camera was introduced to the world, although it was twice as expensive as the first Brownie Camera, it had 2 1/4 by 3 1/4 inch per image, two reflecting view finders, a rotary shutter and a lends with a choice of three different apertures. The Brownie Cameras were voted the most popular camera. After the Brownies cameras had made such a difference to the society, other manufactures decided to market models .
The Kodak Camera.
'You press the button, we do the rest'
This was the slogan that the company that created Kodak came up with when advertising the camera on the market in 1888. This became the start of snapshot photography. 1889, the development of the transparency commercial film was put onto the market due to being perfected by Eastman and his chemists. This also led to other opportunities and developments of Thomas Edison emotion picture camera in 1891. Eastman's company was domed by them taking over assets of the Eastman Dry plate and film company. 1891 was the start of the allowing the photographer to load their film in daylight instead of the darkroom. 1892 was the start of the company Eastman Kodak Company of New York.
